St Petersburg is one of Russia’s most challenging cities for development projects. The city’s progress depends on meaningful dialogue among stakeholders whose interests in the urban environment often diverge: developers, heritage advocates, architects and the city administration. Without this dialogue, St Petersburg — a city that has embodied innovation in architecture and urban planning since its foundation — risks being reduced to a crumbling open-air museum.
GOAL
To organise a public discussion of St Petersburg’s urban-development challenges.

Launched on the Retrogradu.net portal in April 2020, the discussion platform regularly brings together leading industry experts.

Each 90-minute discussion attracts at least 7,500 views and is supported by editorial features and news coverage from RBC, RBC TV and Retrogradu.Net.

Hosting Discussions

Over its first 18 months, the Retrogradu.net — Architecture of St Petersburg team prepared and published exclusive content featuring the views of more than 100 leading experts in fields connected with the development of the city’s architectural character.
Media Coverage
The discussions were prepared and held in collaboration with the RBC-Petersburg business conference department. The Russian Guild of Property Managers and Developers (RGUD) is a regular partner of the project.

The open and transparent approach demonstrated by Retrogradu.Net has enabled the project to become an information partner for industry events in St. Petersburg, including the Golden Trezzini architectural and design competition, the Sobaka.Ru "Petersburg of the Future" award, the Delovoy Petersburg "Heritage of the Future" project, the BIM Expert competition, the Nevsky Construction Forum, and others.
Collaborations
The topics selected for the online discussions created a foundation for leading media outlets to cover the city’s key challenges. The project’s popularity among its target audiences made it possible to move beyond responding to an existing news agenda and begin selecting topics independently and shaping trends that are subsequently picked up by the media and taken into account by the architectural and development communities.
